Site Description:
Internet pornography in the mainstream press is usually discussed
in terms of a moral binary: (1) It-corrupts-our-kids-and-should-be-banned
and (2) Freedom-is-the-essence-of-the-net-and-you-can't-start-censoring.
Such arguments deflect attention from what seems to be the most fascinating
question for me: what is the role of Internet pornography in the creation
and channelisation of libidinal energy in contemporary society? This
essay attempts to place Internet pornography in a much wider context:
that of the erotics of technology and the Market. It argues that Internet
porn is an integral part of the capitalist sublime and that the fact
that the majority of it is consumed via corporate T1 lines - by those
most attuned to the erotic appeal of the marketplace - should be no
surprise. |
